Latest News

So here's what was going on at the end of 'The Name Of The Doctor', for the confused.

 http://cavalorn.livejournal.com/586789.html

There are several things we've known since Doctor Who made its triumphant return in 2005. We know that the Ninth Doctor is traumatised, haunted by what he did to end the Time War. He caused the catastrophe that wiped out Time Lords and Daleks alike:

'They all burned...I saw it happen. I made it happen.'

We also know that Rose was a big part of helping him rediscover his better nature and believe in himself again.

The events of the Time War have never been shown on screen. They've only ever been referred to in grandiose terms that suggest they CANNOT be shown, because they're too mind-wrangling: Davros flying into the jaws of the Nightmare Child, the Could-Have-Been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Never-Weres, and so on.

Now, given that the Christopher Eccleston Doctor seems to be freshly regenerated at the start of 'Rose', fans have tended to assume that he looked like Paul McGann, the Eighth Doctor, while he was committing the terrible deed of wiping out his people and the Daleks all at once. It's a natural assumption.

But we've never seen the McGann Doctor regenerate into the Eccleston Doctor. And that's the gap into which the John Hurt character fits. This is the Doctor's secret; while he was massacring the Daleks and his own people, he had John Hurt's face. And for all that he justifies his deeds - 'What I did, I did without choice, in the name of peace and sanity' - he is still anathema, the skeleton in the Doctor's closet. He is the black sheep in a family of one.

So is John Hurt playing the 'real' Ninth Doctor? No. He's playing the ninth incarnation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor, but he doesn't get to call himself the Doctor, because his actions make him unworthy of that title in the eyes of his other incarnations.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that the Doctor's real name is Ernie Witherspoon, which it isn't, but it'll do. Ernie Witherspoon runs away from Gallifrey in a stolen TARDIS. He adopts 'The Doctor' as his assumed identity; it's a mission statement, an ideal to live up to, 'a promise that you make'. All of Ernie Witherspoon's incarnations except one have lived up to that mission statement. John Hurt is still Ernie Witherspoon, but he's no Doctor.

The source of the confusion is the rather silly title that popped up. 'Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor'. This is the BBC confirming that yes, the John Hurt incarnation is playing the same character as Matt Smith and David Tennant and so on. But he's not The Doctor, because he has no right to call himself that. Not after what he did.

So how do we know John Hurt is playing the incarnation between McGann and Eccleston? Well, because it's been leaked, for one thing. But we also know because Clara found a huge book on the History of the Time War. Now, the Time War only has one survivor, so the book - if it's a complete history - can only have one possible author.

Clara finds a reference to Ernie Witherspoon in the book. The only reason the Doctor would use his real name instead of his proud title of Doctor is if he was talking about the version of himself who defaulted to being Ernie Witherspoon because he had no right to use the title. In other words, the version played by John Hurt.

It's a very clever twist for Moffat to throw in, because it doesn't actually retcon anything. We've always known that the Doctor is ashamed of what he did during the Time War. But we haven't known that all those shameful actions were committed by a hitherto unseen incarnation.

And from a certain point of view, it makes Eccleston's Doctor all the more profound. Because he wasn't just recovering from the Time War, he was deciding to be the Doctor again. The Eccleston incarnation was a chance to resume that title and the moral stance that goes with it, and you can clearly see in episodes like 'Dalek' how horrified he might be that he can't live up to it.

In the end, Eccleston's Doctor proves himself worthy of the title. Faced with the terrible dilemma of wiping out the Daleks and the population of Earth along with them, or taking no action, he chooses to do nothing:

'WHAT ARE YOU, DOCTOR? COWARD OR KILLER?'
'Coward, any day.'

Hurt would have chosen the path of the killer. And that's why the other incarnations deny him the 'Doctor' identity.

DWM Confirms No Classic Doctors in 50th

doctorwhotv.co.uk

According to Doctor Who Magazine, David Tennant will be the only returning Doctor. The new issue (#460) confirms that no other classic Doctors will be back.

The mag states: “Although David Tennant has returned to his role of the Tenth Doctor, the other old Doctors will not be taking part.”

They confirm earlier reports that Christopher Eccleston was initially approached to reprise his role, but was unable to do so.

Citing an earlier quote from Steven Moffat: “It is important you don’t turn it into a fanfest. We can’t make this all about looking backwards. It’s actually got to be the start of a new story.”

They also report that filming on the 50th is near completion, with production on 2013 Christmas Special “and possibly further episodes” starting after Matt Smith works on the film How to catch a Monster

Hunt on for lost tapes starring Doctor Who's Plymouth companion Adrienne Hill

CALLING all Dr Who enthusiasts – are you sitting on the lost tapes of the famous Doctor's Plymothian sidekick?

In preparation for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary on November 23, the BBC is attempting to hunt down missing episodes from the time traveller's past, including those featuring Plymouth actress Adrienne Hill.

The actress, who was born in the city, played Katriana, a handmaid from ancient Troy, in only five episodes of a series called The Daleks' Master Plan in 1964. The show had only been on television for a year when Hill got the part.

She was the shortest-lived of the Time Lord's companions and the first to die while travelling with him.

All but one of her episodes are missing from the BBC archive, along with 101 other episodes of Doctor Who.

The original videotapes were wiped and used for other programmes in the 1960s and 70s.

As was common at the time, copies were thrown out as rights issues meant it was impossible at the time for the BBC to either repeat the programmes or exploit them commercially.

Sometimes, however, the copies marked for destruction found their way into private collections and now Dr Who enthusiasts are being urged to come forward if they think they have copies of Hill's performances.

In an interview in 1986 with Dr Who magazine, Hill, who died from cancer in 1997 at the age of 60, told of her frustration at the episodes having been lost.

She said at the time: "I was over the moon to get the part. My main memory is skulking about and saying 'What next, Doctor?'. It was all fun.

"And now of course it's all been wiped – it's a tragedy!"

The first scene Hill filmed was her character's death, filmed at Ealing Studios. A fight between a prisoner and Katarina ends up with both the strugglers being ejected into space.

After the transmission of the episode, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey production team were so impressed that they rang the Doctor Who makers to ask how the effect of bodies floating in space was achieved.

The actors had been filmed in slow motion bouncing up and down on trampolines.

Hill said in the 1986 interview: "We did that scene on a trampoline, jumping up and down, doing somersaults, the lot, with the cameras filming below us. I was very proud of that and I'm terribly sorry it's been lost. It was very acrobatic and quite painful."

The short-time Dr Who star carried on acting in small roles before marrying and moving to Holland and later America, where she found acting opportunities limited.

She returned to England after divorce and retrained to be a drama teacher working in London.

In 1985, Hill took part in a walk-down of all the surviving Doctors and companions as part of Children in Need, reuniting with her former co-stars, Maureen O'Brien and Peter Purvis.

 River Song in Series 8?

River-Song-KissIt’s no secret that River Song will be making another appearance again this year in the latter half of Series 7. Producer Caroline Skinner confirmed as much late last year. But what does the future hold beyond that?

Based on Alex Kingston’s latest comments, it appears River will remain on Doctor Who for a while yet.

Kingston has said she is happy to continue playing the role for as long as Moffat needs:

I’m so attached to that character. I never expected her to grow and develop in the way she has. You never know whether she’s going to be hard-ass or good. As long as Steven Moffat has storylines that include her, I will always say yes,” she says in the new issue of Radio Times.

Doctor Who: Executive Producer Moves On

Executive producer Caroline Skinner is leaving Doctor Who to join BBC Drama Production in London. She leaves the show in good shape, with a brilliant new run of blockbuster episodes starting on Easter Saturday.

Caroline told us, ‘It has been an honour to have been a part of Doctor Who, and a privilege to have worked with Steven Moffat and Matt Smith on this extraordinary show.  I have hugely enjoyed my time in BBC Wales and would like to thank Faith Penhale, and our wonderful production team for their unending commitment and brilliance.  I will miss them all enormously, but I'm leaving Doctor Who in fine form, with the new series starting at Easter and the fantastic plans for the 50th Anniversary already underway.  I am delighted to be now returning to BBC Drama Production in London as an executive producer, and the new opportunities and projects that will bring.’

BBC Wales’ Head of Drama, Faith Penhale, will be undertaking the role of executive producer on the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who, alongside show runner, writer and executive producer Steven Moffat.

'None of us have heard anything': Sylvester McCoy denials involvement in Doctor Who 50th anniversary special

13 Mar 2013 15:29

Former Time Lord actor says that Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Colin Baker have not been approached either

Sylvester McCoy has categorically denied he will play any part in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary celebrations.

Speaking to IGN, the seventh Time Lord incarnation also said that three other Doctors have not been approached by the BBC either.

"[I've heard] nothing. Niet. Zilch," the 69-year-old is reported to have said.

"The other day I was with Tom Baker, Peter [Davison], and Colin [Baker] - the 20th century Who-ers - and Tom asked, 'Well, little man, have you heard anything?' and I told him, 'No, I haven't heard anything'.

"So none of us have heard anything."

In other Who news, the show’s executive producer is moving on to take up a new position at BBC Drama Production in London.

Caroline Skinner - who joined the show in 2011 - said that she was leaving a series currently in "fine form".

"It has been an honour to have been a part of Doctor Who, and a privilege to have worked with Steven Moffat and Matt Smith on this extraordinary show," she said in a statement.

"I have hugely enjoyed my time in BBC Wales and would like to thank [BBC Wales' Head of Drama] Faith Penhale, and our wonderful production team for their unending commitment and brilliance.

"I will miss them all enormously, but I'm leaving Doctor Who in fine form, with the new series starting at Easter and the fantastic plans for the 50th Anniversary already underway."

It is believed that Penhale will now serve as Who executive producer alongside Moffat for the 50th anniversary special.

Alex Kingston: “I Will Always Say Yes.”

By Philip Bates, March 12, 2013 - Doctor Who - no comments

River Song herself, Alex Kingston, is interviewed in the current issue of Radio Times, dated 16th- 22nd March 2013.

River Song

In the Q&A, My Watchlist, the actress, who recently appeared in Who Do You Think You Are? and NCIS, reveals that she’d definitely be up for the return of River:

I’m so attached to that character. I never expected her to grow and develop in the way she has. You never know whether she’s going to be hard-ass or good. As long as Steven Moffat has storylines that include her, I will always say yes.

Alex has played River Song since 2008’s Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead, written by current-showrunner, Steven Moffat – in which she died! – and has since appeared in stories like The Pandorica Opens/ The Big BangA Good Man Goes To War and The Angels Take Manhattan. And with recent rumours about (SPOILERS!) a certain gravestone, it’s likely that we’ll see the Doctor’s humany-Time Lord wife again soon.

McCoy on 50th Anniversary

Another week, another 50th anniversary comment from a classic era Doctor.

Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy is the latest to claim that he has not been approached to appear in the special.

IGN recently spoke to the actor in a live chat and asked if he had heard anything yet. He replied: “No. Nothing. Niet. Zilch.”

He added: “The other day I was with Tom Baker, Peter, and Colin – the 20th century Who-ers, and Tom asked ‘Well, little man, have you heard anything?’ and I told him ‘No, I haven’t heard anything.’ So none of us have heard anything.”

With filming set to begin very soon, you’d think they would have heard by now…

Doctor Who’ Special Effects Company, Mercury FX Limited, To Close

A company responsible for the special effects in ‘Doctor Who’ is set to close as the show approaches it’s 50th anniversary.

Mercury FX Limited, who were also responsible for SFX on the axed BBC Three vampire series ‘Being Human’ as well as spy drama ‘Spooks’, appointed liquidators on Monday.

An unpaid bill to the Inland Revenue was credited as the reason for the company’s closure, with unpaid taxes of over £80,000. There were also other debuts totalling over £20,000.

The company previously ran under the names DarkHorse FX and BBC Design Bristol.

 POINTLESS

A special Doctor Who edition of BBC quiz show 'Pointless' is to air later this month.

The quiz one-off will be broadcast on Saturday, 23rd March at 6pm on BBC One - one week before Doctor Who returns to our screens.

Famous faces from Doctor Who will be putting their obscure knowledge to the test include Sylvester McCoy (Seventh Doctor) with Sophie Aldred (his assistant Ace) and Bernard Cribbins (Wilfred Mott) paired with Jacqueline King (Sylvia Noble).

They will face Nicola Bryant (Peri) playing with Andrew Hayden-Smith (Jake Simmons) and Louise Jameson (Leela) alongside Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon in the 1960's).

Alexander Armstrong will host, with co-presenter Richard Osman receiving some robotic assistance in the form of the Doctor's loyal dog, K-9.

Eight new Doctor Who episodes will air on Saturday nights from 30th March, with a number of additional projects also being planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary later in 2013.

 Will Whithouse be Moffat’s Successor?

Toby Whithouse has spoken about the possibly of taking over as the next head writer when Steven Moffat hands over the reins.

Whithouse previously penned Doctor Who episodes School ReunionThe Vampires of Venice, The God Complexand last year’s A Town Called Mercy. His own show, Being Human, concluded last night after five series.

On the rumours of him working full time on Doctor Who in the future, he said: “I have heard the rumours. I’ve been hearing them for years now. In terms of what Matt and Steven are planning after the anniversary, I do know the answers to those things, but there is absolutely no way I can tell anyone.

In terms of my future on Doctor Who, this kind of speculation only takes place in the heads of the fans. I’m going to be busy doing The Game for however long that lasts and I think Steven is doing incredible work on Doctor Who and I’d much rather he stay there. No-one from the BBC has said anything to me. Whether or not it’s something the BBC is considering, I genuinely have no idea.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued by the idea, but also it would be terrifying. It’s definitely something I’d be really tempted by but I’m genuinely not in any hurry to do it. And why do people assume the BBC would want me? I’m sure there are much stronger contenders than me!”

"It was Mark Gatiss's idea [to bring the Ice Warriors back] - it was very much his pitch," said Moffat. "He'd been pitching [their return] for a while."

Doctor Who to Return with 'The Bells of St John'
- First Official Picture!

Doctor Who is to return to BBC One on 30 March in a modern day urban thriller announced today as 'The Bells of St John', as the first official image is revealed giving fans a sneak peak at what to expect from the epic new series.
Written by Steven Moffat, 'The Bells of St John' will mark the official introduction of the Doctor's newest companion, Clara Oswald, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.  Having already made two appearances last year, the opening episode will be the first time fans get to see the Clara that will accompany the Doctor across the series' eight adventures.
Set in London against the backdrop of new and old iconic landmarks, The Shard and Westminster Bridge, 'The Bells of St John' will also establish a new nemesis, the Spoonheads, who will battle the Doctor as he discovers something sinister is lurking in the Wi-Fi.
Steven Moffat, executive producer and lead writer, said:
"It's the 50th year of Doctor Who and look what's going on! We're up in the sky and under the sea! We're running round the rings of an alien world and then a haunted house. There's new Cybermen, new Ice Warriors and a never before attempted journey to the centre of the TARDIS. And in the finale, the Doctor's greatest secret will at last be revealed!  If this wasn't already our most exciting year it would be anyway!"
Featuring a movie a week from a ghost story to an underwater siege to a period drama, the new series will also introduce new monsters, as well as bringing back fan favourites the Ice Warriors and Cybermen.
Meanwhile the series' stellar list of guest stars include: Celia Imrie; Richard E Grant; Warwick Davies, Jessica Raine; Dougray Scott and Tamzin Outhwaite, as well as for the first time on screen together, mother and daughter Dame Diana Rigg and Rachael Stirling.
